Does the back look the same? My guess would be that it was in a fire or really near a fire? or maybe some sort of corrosive acid, battery acid was spilled on it. Definitely happened after it left the mint though.

probably played with by someone with chemicals/acid. But, you cannot discount speedy decomposition outside in the dirt, rain, etc.
