I guess I should poke at them to see if they are plating bubbles.

The one on the right appears slightly larger and not perfectly round?

My first thought on seeing these was that they could be from Rockwell Test Marks on the die. While it would be interesting to see a very closeup image of these two bumps, I doubt that they are from Rockwell test Marks on a Die. I do not know whether tests were made on dies before or after they were impressed with a design, but I suspect it was before, so that the evidence would not show up on a design element. They also do not appear, from this photo, to have the correct geometry.

If they were rockwell markers, wouldn't they be incluse? These are raised and you are right about the one on the right. (not really round)

Quote: If they were rockwell markers, wouldn't they be incluse? Yes if the test was done on a planchet. No if the test was on the die.

Never occurred to me that they would check the die. I learn something new on here every day.

Quote: Never occurred to me that they would check the die. I learn something new on here every day. They do check the die, but since the die is a different hardness than a planchet, it is checked with a different Rockwell Scale - which means different pressure and with an indenter which has different tip geometry. This results in a test mark which is left which is different.

I don't think they test the zinc planchets. They are raised so they are probably gas bubbles under the plating.

Quote: I don't think they test the zinc planchets Zinc planchets are subjected to Rockwell Tests. There are several sources for this information, one of which is the "Alternative Metals Study" commissioned by the US Mint in 2012. I can provide more details should anyone be interested.
