This is part of an inherited coin collection that also contained medals and tokens. I can not get a clue as to what this piece is. I believe it says R(or B)& A, 395. it weighs 9.14g and is irregularly shaped. It is about 22mm long and 18 mm wide. Any help IDing is appreciated.

the finishing of this item to me looks very basic, and is unlikely IMO to be a medal, which would be made for show.

I think this would rather be some sort of ID tag for someone working for the company R(or B)& A company, employee number 395. the logo of the company is on the other side.

I would suggest looking at mining companies, and each employee had a tag similar to this and each box load they loaded they would tag the load with their tag.

It looks like a lead merchant seal, used for either security or identification purposes.

With the hints provide I found a link for a bale seal that seems to have has the same logo on it. Description says:It is probably of Dutch origin, the shield with lion rampart a simplified Dutch coat of arms. The 'R' would originally have read 'R&A', for 'Regten en Accynsen', the Dutch customs and excise, and the number 343 was probably a control number. It seems reasonable to assume that this object was used as an official seal for goods exported from Holland to the UK, and is likely to date from c. 1750-1850.

Mine seems to be more modern than the one posted, but definitely seem related.

It's a lead bale seal.
It's almost identical to a 17th century Dutch seal. The crowned shield with lion rampant is the same and the R &(?) A represents Regten en Accisen (state finance department).Probably a tax paid seal for the export of a product.
There have been lead seals found near early Dutch colonies in the US.

I had never heard of a bale seal until about a month ago and --- here's one on CCF!

That's a pretty neat little item.
