Hi all.

When looking on NGC regarding the 1955-g commemorative von Baden 5 mark, they state is was an unauthorized minting with the real dies.
https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...-duid-112922

Does anyone have the story behind it? Did the dies get stolen or what happened?

Thanks

Just as the description says, the coin was struck at the Mint using the original dies but without authorization. Mint workers struck an unknown number of these coins so as to profit on the coin's scarcity on the secondary market.

I was curious about your question so I did a little internet research on the subject of the 5-DM Gedenkmünze Ludwig von Baden (a.k.a Türkenlouis). I was unable to find any reference to an unauthorized
minting of the coin at the Karlsruhe mint where the coins were struck.

2000 in PP and 198000 circulation issues were struck. No mention in any of the sources or the major german catalogues (Jäger, AKS, Money Trend) about an unauthorized minting.

Hmm, that's odd, maybe I should email NGC and see where they got their information from...
