Hello guys, I was browsing a few coins and could not help but notice I thought grading on a few coins were a bit higher than what I personally thought they were. Am I right or wrong . Example below is of a coin graded at AU55 yet another coin which I thought personally was better only graded at AU53. This coin is clearly 6 pearls not 8 and has a major scratch on the reverse that looks to be PMD, I didn't think a 6 pearl coin would be classed AU never alone 55. What do you all think.? Maybe I'm way of and missing something with grading.? But I don't think 1 year is a big deal and I would think the 14 would be harder to find in good grade. ? Some thing we can all discuss. Regards Sweet. I have a couple picks of the coin graded AU53 which I think is a better coin. Personally that is. I will put them at the bottom .

the scratch is OK for a coin of that grade. 1913 and 1914 pennies never have much in the way of 4th set of pearls when unc so looking at just the pearls is not a good way of grading them. The moustache looks a little weaker on the 1914, otherwise they show similar wear, but you would be able to tell better with the coins in hand. All the same I'd agree the 1914 is a more attractive coin.

Not much in it and as agent86 said you need to take into account that some coins might have a weak strike. There is also a chance that if these 2 coins were resubmitted they could easily drop a grade or go one better as I have experienced

The AU53 penny isn't as good in the band on the crown as the AU55 penny. Otherwise they are similar or the lower graded coin may be a touch nicer. I also wonder if they have left standards slip as I have seen a few rarities that seem to have been graded gently.

Fair enough guys , I didn't think there was much in it just seemed bit strange I thought. To me the I feel the AU53 was the nicer coin but like you said its just a grade either way.

PCGS cannot grade world coins to save their souls. Those two pieces are classically EXF coins. Don't worry my Aussie cousins they "butcher" Canadian coins the same way. With PCGS one thing is certain ........you are going to pay lots for an opinion that more often than not these days is incorrect. Buy the coin and not the holder.

Hmm yes well I was thinking that , I personally think they are not AU , There is to much wear on them to be AU.
But I'm no expert that's why I asked.
I have no beef with PCGS I just thought it was a bit strange that's all. To me the 1914 AU53 is buy far the better coin and I don't think you need to be an expert to spot that.
Those who have commented here were nice about it and said yes that coin does appear to be more appealing. Which to me says its better.
Good to here different opinions makes me think about things a little clearer.

I'm probaly in the minority but as far as Aust. coins go,i agree, some strange grades that people take as Gospel. After saying that PCGS with all its faults is probaly the best most consistent option for slabbing if people need a security blanket for their Coins.

One of the things that did come to mind was if I had a coin slabbed and its grade was down a notch or so would that be fair when the time to move it on came. ? Some one with what some would call a lesser coin with the same or better grading would do well against your coin.
And then there is the fact a grade or so on a more sort after piece may cost you quiet a bit when you come to move it on at no fault of yours or the coin.
I'm not having ago at PCHS or anyone else its just my opinion after studying a few slabs and not just PCGS slabs the others seem to do it a bit as well.
I guess its all about preference and the individual that grades it as I,m sure its not the same people every time.
I have read on a few posts how some members don't actually like slabs and prefer the coin as is and then there are others who only want slabs. Its good to get an idea and that's all I am trying to do improve my lack of knowledge on the subject.
