I enjoy torturing myself, so I've started working on a PCGS MS set. This definitely is gonna be a many year journey as I am working on other sets at the same time. Right now I am having the hardest time finding an 09s in 64rd. I find it hard to believe I can instantly find hundreds of the "king of key date Lincoln", but no 09s cent anywhere in the grade I want. What am I missing?  When I do find it, it sure will look nice with these ones beside it.   Still haven't decided if I want to do all the varieties, but I do have the s horizontal s in the wrong holder.  |

You should get one S-VDB for each of the four obverse dies.

What am I missing? Perhaps this is because the 09 S VDB was saved after the initials were removed due to people thinking (correctly) that it would become rare. The 09 S had no such thought accompanying it. Good Luck! Those are fantastic coins. |

Hmmm, only one of your three slabs is a "Lincoln". I think this is because the VDB designation identifies it as a Lincoln Cent. For the 1909, it needs to be stated to avoid ambiguity since both 1909 Indian Head cents and 1909 Lincoln cents exist. Likewise with the 1909-S. |

Agree. Trying to find an example with the eye appeal you want AND not priced to the moon is tough. And for that kind of money, it's nice to look at it in hand. Good luck - maybe tomorrow is the day!

Well I just got home from the show, and there was only 1 1909s graded 64 on the floor. It is in a PCGS MS64RB holder  I spent a lot of time looking over the coin and I think I may grab it. I am about 90% certain I can resubmit it and get the RD designation. I took it to the ANACS table and he thought it should be RD not RB. I also walked it over to one of my favorite dealers (who's opinion I trust greatly) and he too thought it should be in a RD holder. If it stays in the RB holder though its one of the nicest RB cents I've ever seen, and it matches my other coins in eye appeal. |

Agree this seems to be a tough issue to find in top condition. I have been looking for a 65RB that suits my finicky tastes for almost 6 months now. Like you, no problem at all with the other 3 LWC from this year. |

It's kind of crazy that seemingly easy coins are so hard to track down. Before I really started on this journey I always assumed the 09s vdb would be the hard one to track down, because of it's status as "the key Lincoln". Talking with some of the dealers they were saying the 23 and 24 are gonna be just as hard to find in the same condition. They said the strikes are horrible and solid struck pieces are few and far between.
I guess I'm glad I enjoy the hunt as much as owning the coin.

There was a big collection of RD early date Lincolns that went up on Heritage not too long ago. Those were some of the first I have seen even offered in recent memory. Many went for $1500, $2000 and up. Just not much to chose from and what is out there is expensive. I am working on RB coins, typically in the 63 range and even those are very very hard to find. There's coins I'd like to upgrade in my set for sure but I could spend a small fortune to get it where I would really like it to be.
