Weight is 2.67g. Diameter and width = normal. Color is very dark brown. Why is it weighing a little heavy? Ideas?

I found one last night that weighed 2.6. My scale does not do hundredths. I thought it was a little strange also. Maybe a little more copper plating on them in 83 ?

I suppose it could be possible, but all 83s I have weighed vary from 2.46g to 2.54g.

Interesting. This is the first one I've weighed since reading about the copper ones floating around. Curios to see what others have to say about the extra weight.

I am thinking about your idea of thicker plating. This coin shows wear on the rims and the top of the memorial and it is copper showing (not zinc). I suppose that would support a thicker plating idea?
Rest in Peace

The weight for the solid copper alloy cent is 3.1 grams.
I would think 2.6 is within tolerance for the normal 1983. IMO

I have seen a source that states the tolerance for a Wheat cent is +/- 0.013g. I would think it would be close to the same for the Zinc.

I have searched for a reference which gives the tolerances for Zinc Cents. Can anyone refer me to such a source?

Either rolled-thick zinc stock or abnormally thick copper plating.

May just be photos playing tricks with my eyes again, but seems to be a foreign substance maybe coating the surface of the coin. Thanks, Doug.

Looks like part of the environment, maybe oil or grease and dirt. It all adds up, together with what Mike said.
