I always felt it ironic that such a proponent and defender of the U.S. Constitution, war hero, and ardent American citizen could never rise to the level of the Presidency. He demonstrated true "statesmanship".

Perhaps not ironic, but certainly fateful. It is doubtful that, had he lived, he could have been elected in the Jeffersonian era.
