In my 30+ years I've never encountered such an error on a check. I apologize for starting a new thread with such a narrowly focused subject. Just wanted to share my with everyone.

I'm not a cheque collector but I do appreciate the style that these old ones had.
The hand writing on some of these has great flair.
That $15,000 in 1873 had me wondering.Checked out the CPI (Consumer price Index). It starts at 1914.Even so that $15,000 in 1914 is $354,787.50 today.

Very nice. The Calligraphy on the check along with Lady Liberty (?) is awesome.

I found this on the net, LOTS of money:

If you want to compare the value of a $15,000.00 Income or Wealth , in 1873 there are four choices. In 2015 the relative:
historic standard of living value of that income or wealth is $306,000.00
labor earnings of that commodity is $2,050,000.00 (using the unskilled wage) or $3,820,000.00 (using production worker compensation)
economic status value of that income or wealth is $4,090,000.00
economic power value of that income or wealth is $30,500,000.00

Was that for a transfer between banks?

That is way cool. Beautiful find. Just wonder if there is any way to follow that money trail. That would be a novel worth writing.

In truth, checks of this amount are not uncommon at all, even in the 1870s. Lots of money moved around even back then. But that gutter fold is *quite* uncommon! First time I've seen an error like that on a check -- nice find!
