maybe "Greek Coin Types and Their Identification" by Plant"? I just ordered my copy last week based on the discussion from another CCF thread.

Kinda reminds me of the veiled woman obverse types (with tripod reverses) from Melita/Malta, such as:

The obverse looks like the veiled head as the Constantine memorial issue, but the reverse doesn't match hat issue. I really can't say what the reverse image is.

I am seeing this as the "obverse" with a crude portrait facing right, with hanging dreadlocks and pearls/beads in its hair. I *know* I have seen something just like it before, but I cannot remember where! IMO, this mystery is well worth $4.50 to solve

I was thinking the same thing about that obverse portrait, Ron. I wonder if this influenced the design for the Constantinian memorial pieces. I think the reverse is a musical instrument, specifically a Lyre. I would look at regions where the worship of Apollo was significant. Was there an Apollonia? [ Just checked, there were a few. But if that obverse is a veiled female head and the reverse is a lyre, then I'm guessing that it is a reference to an oracle, possibly at Delphi? ]

Perhaps you're right, Irbguy, and it's a lyre/kithara. Still, looks suspiciously like a tripod to me...like a variant of the Melita issue below. Hopefully someone pins it down for sure. OP coin:

I think that Melita coin takes it. Way more similarities in overall design than just the central tripod image, which also looks spot on.

I think you guys are right--I guess this goes to demonstrate how the human mind tries to find human features even when none are present.
Not exactly as fun as a poorly engraved Celtic coin, but it still looks like I got a good deal.
Thanks to all!
