This coin is in my Type I gold dollar collection. Although The Red Book might lead you to believe that this coin is as common as the Open Wreath varieties, it isn't. You have to do some digging at the shows to find it.

Beautiful, as all your coins. I'll say 64 at least, allowing for tics in lower obverse field, but that may be too harsh.

NGC graded this 1849 Close Wreath gold dollar MS-64. The lack of marks might suggest a higher grade, but the surfaces have a satin, not a flashy finish. I have learned that the grades are more impressed with flashy luster than they are smooth surfaces. I've seen coins, with more marks than they should have had for the grade assigned, get a boost because of strong luster.
