Yep, it's that time of year again, when I attend my one and only large coin show, the Bay State Coin Show in Marlborough, MA (Friday and Saturday, 10-7, at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel at 181 Boston Post Road West in Marlborough). This year, it happens to fall during my 11-year-old son's school vacation week, so I don't have to pretend he is sick in order to take him along... I actually spent a good deal of money already this year on coins via ebay and other sources, so I'm not planning on going hog wild. Right now, the only coin I really need to fill a hole is a proof 20 Cent piece for my proof type set, but I doubt I will find one in my price range at the show (last year I saw only one, and it was a high grade example selling for around $10,000). I am thinking I might be able to find a nice "Coronet" Half Cent to replace the one currently in my 7070 album (it was an early purchase and was harshly cleaned at some point). I'm also thinking I might upgrade my current 1909S VDB Lincoln Cent (I purchased a brown AU55 example at last year's show and would really like to see if I can trade up to something in MS Red or Red/Brown). I'm also going to bring a couple of other coins I hope to either sell outright or use to help pay for other coins. I somehow managed to get two proof Liberty Head Nickels, and might be able to unload one of them. I also think it's time to try and get rid of my original proof Morgan dollar that I got a couple of years ago. It's a PR62, but doesn't have nearly as much eye appeal as the PR63 example I picked up recently (the one I am currently using as my avatar). I paid $1900 for it, but I'm not sure what sort of price I would get from a dealer. Anyway, I hope to have a great time and maybe even see one or two of you there!

Have some fun Barry and it's nice your son is out of school this week. Your collection is already so amazing! And as always when you return...

All right, got back from the show a little while ago. About an hour drive and I didn't sleep well last night, so I'm wiped out. All in all, a good show for me. I didn't have a huge budget this time around, but I bought some coins to trade/sell as I mentioned and was able to pick up some nice stuff. My son also had a great time and was able to pick up a couple of nice coins for his 7070 album at good prices. First up is an updated 1909S VDB Lincoln Cent. I purchased one at least year's show for around $900 in AU55, but really wasn't happy with the way it looked. I traded up for an MS64 RB example for an extra $1300: Next up is an upgrade to my Coronet Half Cent that I got for $375 as a dealer-graded MS63. My old one was harshly cleaned at some point, but this one still appears to have original surfaces [I bought it raw since it is going right in my album]: The last coin I bought was a total impulse buy. I don't have any pre-1800 copper and I couldn't resist picking up this 1795 Liberty Cap Large Cent for around $575: Finally, for you currency collectors out there, I picked up this decent-looking Series 1914 Twenty Dollar Federal Reserve Note with a red seal (much rarer than the blue seal variety) for $850: In other news, I managed to sell my old PR62 Morgan dollar for a slight loss from what I paid two years ago. I'm not too unhappy with that, since I really wasn't thrilled with it's eye appeal. A number of dealers felt it had been dipped at some point, which hurt the mirrors, while others thought it was a problem-free coin. I paid $1900 for it and I sold it for $1700 (after getting offers as low as $1300-1400 for it). Sadly, the dealer paid by check, so I couldn't put the money toward any other coins...

Quote: especially that 09 S VDB Yeah, I wish my dad had lived long enough for me to show it to him. As far as he was concerned, that was the rarest, best possible coin you could ever own and he often talked about getting one someday. I showed him the AU-55 example I bought last year just weeks before he passed away, but I think this one would have really blown his socks off. In other words, I'm glad you like it!

I wish I had a better camera. They have really good eye appeal that doesn't show in my lousy pictures. I was looking for a 1928 MS64, found a couple of stunning coins but the dealers wanted full retail for them. Not what you want o pay at a coin show. Overall, I found it a very enjoyable, if not somewhat crowded, show. I only live 15 min. away so I bought a 2 day pass.

I forgot one more coin I bought on my way out the door. A guy had a box of junk silver Morgan dollars for $22 a piece and I couldn't resist liberating this one to be my new pocket piece: I think somebody used some Turtle Wax on it, and it's now so shiny it can probably be seen from space...
