Over the last several years, whenever I take the kids from church on a retreat at our Bible Camp in north-central Wisconsin, I bring my detector along and give the kids a chance to try it out. I've got a number of them into detecting because of it.
I'm going to hold a metal detecting outing with all the interested kids in a couple of weeks, some of whom now have their own detectors. After putting out the word to the members of my church I've had several of them offer spots where I can take the kids.
One of them is a nature preserve about fifteen minutes away that was once a farm along the Milwaukee River. I received permission this week from the board of directors and went out yesterday to check it out.
I went down to a spot by the river where there are now a couple of storage sheds for wood that's been cut down. My first find was an aluminum tent stake, so I thought people may have camped there. Just feet from that I hit an enormous coin spill. There must be fifteen to twenty coins. I dug up a few of them and they were all 1970s Lincoln Memorials. I reburied them all and will let the kids find them when we go there is a couple of weeks.
There were also a number of others spots where I found coins, mostly 1960s and 1970s Memorials. I reburied them all where I found them.
I'm toying with the idea of "salting" the area with a couple of worn
Buffalo nickels and the like so the kids find something a bit more interesting, but I'm sure they'll have a good time whatever they find.
I'll post some photos after we take the kids there and let them have some fun on May 21.
