Hello.
I have a coin that my wife left me when she died last year. I have not been able to figure out what it is. It looks like tarnished silver to me. There are no recognizable dates on it.
I have attached pictures of it. Can someone please help me identify it?
Thanks!

to CCF. Sorry for your loss. Looks like a "copy" of a widows mite.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. May I ask how long you were married? My wife and I have been together 27 years and I can't imagine how you feel.

As far as the coin I agree it is a copy probably mass produced in China. You can get them for about a buck per coin.

Thank you everyone!

OGP: My wife and I were together for 37 years. It has been extremely difficult I'm glad she went first though because I wouldn't want her to go through this. Bless you and your wife and your marriage together.

I've moved this thread into the Ancients section, since it is an imitation of an ancient coin. This particular replica we've seen on the forum numerous times before; because it has no obvious, easy-to-read markings (like, say, the word "COPY" stamped on it) it is a very confusing piece once the context and reason for obtaining it is forgotten.

It will be made of brass, or perhaps copper-plated pewter. These pieces are mass-produced and marketed on religious supplies websites. The idea is that a church buys them in bulk, so that an entire church congregation, youth group etc. can be given one, as a reminder of the biblical story of the Widow's Mite.

If you are curious about what a genuine "widow's mite" looks like, check out the examples on this Wildwinds page.

Sorry for your loss. As the others have stated this is not a real coin.

The modern producers of this keepsake piece appear to have been emulating the star-and-anchor prutah of the Hasmonean, Alexander Jannaeus.

Very sorry for your loss!

It is a copy of a widow's mite, here is a full description:

Alexander Jannaeus AE Prutah. 103-76 B.C. BASigma;Iota;Lambda;Epsilon;Omega;Sigma; ALambda;Epsilon;Xi;ANu;Delta;Rho;Omicron;Upsilon;, Upside down anchor within circle. / Aramaic inscription, "King Alexander Year 25", Star of eight rays. Hendin 469 (Note, on original examples, the Aramaic inscription is between the stars, omitted from this copy)
