Not much detail on this little copper guy--maybe a few letters on the obv? Diameter is 13 mm and mass is 1.5 g. I'd love your thoughts on attributions.

Perhaps the emperor, veiled, standing right (VN-MR) reverse type?

Ok thanks Bob. So then RIC-32, right? If I squint, then I think I can make out at least part of the VN and MR on the rev.

Ok sorry no that is wrong. I see now that this is only for coins minted in Alexandria. I'm not sure that I can make out enough in the exergue to pin down the mint. Maybe I need to gently remove that concretion on the rev.

I'll leave it to our Roman-expert friends to confirm and suggest the RIC assignment. So, are you moving from medieval to ancients, or just dabbling?

No not dabbling--rather trying to attribute what I've already got. I have a whole pile of roman, greek, and other ancient culls that I picked up on a pre-9/11 trip to Tunisia. I've been slowly trying to chip away at identifying ones that have at least some detail.

Not sure what to do with the ones with absolutely no detail. Maybe chuck them on the ground in the woods and let someone with a metal detector find them.

I can't get to my copy of RIC right now for a number. I've thought about seeding the woods with all the culls I had. Can you imagine the stir that would cause? I can see the headlines. "Ancient Roman Coins found in the woods of South East Washington" I just gave them away to any one that wanted them.

it's a strange looking reverse. you know, there are some version of this coin that don't have the usual "hand of god" quadriga and veiled constantine reverse...maybe this is one of them?
