I think your out of luck. As I understand it you need at least part of the 2nd serial number to get a replacement for it.

"Any badly soiled, dirty, defaced, disintegrated, limp, torn, worn, out currency note that is CLEARLY MORE than one-half of the original note, and does not require special examination to determine its value. These notes should be exchanged through your local bank and processed by the Federal Reserve Bank."

Moonshine check the $1 and see if one has a sticky part of note about middle of note.
Its an old scam to get $40.00 out $20.00 cut a 20 in half and glue it some how to a 1 dollar bill and pass it off as a $20.00

A bit OT, but whatever...

I like that link Bio. I have actually heard a story about a guy who had a cow eat his wallet. He had just been to the bank, and he had a bunch of cash. He had the cow slaughtered, and sent them the stomach(s?) and they found the wallet determined how much money he had, and reimbursed him. So he got his money back and some steak! thats a win-win in my book.

When I was in high school, I went on a class trip to Washington DC in 1990. We toured the BEP and actually got to see the room where they examine mutilated currency(we we on the outside looking through a window). They were sorting burnt currency that day, and alot of it

Sounds like you used to live around the Chicago area. Yes that scam was really popular for lots of reasons. One was as you mentioned. Also, could make a lot of singles look like a lot of $20's if your in a bar and want to impress a girl.

I thought that the law was that as long as you had at least 51% of the note, it was still valid?
