Hello.

I need some help. A seller has recently offered to sell me this coin. I am told the Arabic says something along the lines of "beaten in Tripoli in 1223" but the same seller also claims this coin to be over 700 years old. Which based on my rudimentary understanding of the Arabic calendar this would seem to not make any sense. As I believe 1223 would translate into a Gregorian date of about 1808. Which fits the timeframe of the Barbary Wars but again nowhere near 700 years old.

Then there is perhaps the ancient County of Tripoli (1109-1289). I assume here the seller translated the date into the Gregorian date. The Country of Tripoli did border the Kingdom of Jerusalem in about what is now modern day Lebanon. I can't find any wars which occurred between those two countries around 1223 but maybe "beaten" is in the context of "struck" or "minted" and doesn't actually mean a literal conquest?

Also the Star of David (if that what it is I do not know if in ancient times any other civilizations also used this type of star) on the reverse mixed with Turk / Ottoman styles I admit seems quite interesting. Does anyone have any idea as to this coin's identity? Civilization? Is it a fake? Any info or direction would be must appreciated.

Ps. Sorry for the images I did not take these pictures. I did try to enhance them the best I could to bring out the details.

With that Seal of Solomon (the more proper term here than Star of David), it might be Moroccan. Unfortunately I don't have the time to research now.

I agree on the date being AH 1223, which does correspond to AD 1808.

Mahmud II? See number 46 here, from Valentine's "Modern Copper Coins of the Muhammadan States":

Is that a match? (I think it is but am not certain)

I believe it's a falus (sp) of Morocco. That location had a heavy Jewish population
in the 19 century.

@Bob L you are amazing. !! Also sorry for my ignorance on the name of the star. Very interesting.
@spence Thank you for confirming my translation was correct.
@fioti Thank you.

So the translate of "beaten" would you all think would better mean "minted"?

Perhaps "struck" is the best english word to use in your translation of the obv inscription. It certainly does not mean beaten in the sense that a battle was fought and subsequently won.

I bet there are some Marines who would like to have a coin struck at Tripoli from that time period. From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli.
