Going through some of my inherited coins & found one that my grandfather had marked "off color". I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about it. Thanks.

Possibly something was added to the surface of the coin and now worn partially off now showing the copper. It doesn't increase the value, actually lowers the value.

Its been identified as such and in this flip since at least 1975 when my grandfather died. Then it sat in a locked cabinet for well over 30 years. I suppose someone could have simply messed with it before it was in his possession and maybe he set it aside because he thought it strange. I'll keep it as is for the simple fact that its his handwriting and he passed before I was born.

It may have been painted? Who knows. But it is not a mint error.
Rest in Peace

It doesn't look that much of an off color wheatie . I would say an environment issue .
