This 1795 Half Cent (Cohen 6a) is not in a super grade, but it has an interesting story to tell about practices in the early days of the first U.S. mint. I'll be back with the story tomorrow if no one else picks up on it.

I'm at F-12. It looks like it was struck on a foreign planchet. I can't think of any contemorary US issue that would make the designs underneath the main design.

I'm going to say Fine+. The over strike seems to be that of a large cent. The digits are too big for the Half Cent. Very interesting coin. Of course a beauty!
Rest in Peace

Was it struck on a "Talbot, Allum & Lee " token?

Struck on a cut-down large cent? I'll say F-15 for grade.

F 12. It looks to be struck over a large cent as on the reverse you can see, E CENT.

Good call on the Talbot, Allum, and Lee theory "The mint, desperatly seeking copper stock, used these tokens as planchets for the 1795 Half Cents variety without poles" http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/Col...t.intro.html

Congratulations to those who spotted that this coin was struck of a Talbot, Allum & Lee token! That's what it is. In 1795 the mint got a fairly large number of these tokens, rolled them out and cut them down to make Half Cents.

This piece shows more the TAL undertype than most, and it has made the rounds of a couple major auctions for that reason. The EAC grade on this coin is VG despite the rim bump at 3k on the reverse.

Here is a group of photos that show the undertype on the coin and the corresponding spots on a TAL Cent.
