I am back with another possible RPM. This one is a circulated 1956 D 1C with what looks to be a CCW or South RPM. I can't seem to find a match on variety vista. Help is greatly appreciated! -CRHer

I think this one looks like a normal mint mark. I don't see a spread. That is one helps to determine the RPM. I see what you are talking about, But looks more like a normal mint mark. The great the spread, the better the chance for it to be listed.

Thanks coop! Do you know what causes that vertical line in the vertical part of the D mintmark?

Are talking about the bottom edge of the mint mark next to the field? If so it maybe isolated die polishing that may have widened that area?

Kind of reminds me of a 1956D WRPM-39. Does it have an extra eyelid south? WRPM39 is also WDDO-20.

That is a nice penny. What would rpm stand for- other than rotations per minute?

RPM stand for Re Pumched Mintmark. In broad summary an RPM is where there are two mintamrks. Here is some information: http://doubleddie.com/58243.htmlIt gives a nice overview of how RPMs and OMMs happen.

I haven't been able to throw this cent back and keep coming back to it. I attached a third photo showing what appears to be a split upper serif. -CRHer

So do you agree that it is an RPM or just a hit?

I am a bit confused by your response. Do you think it is an rpm or just MD/PSD?

I'm not seeing a RPM. The mint mark can still be thicker in certain areas, because it is hand punched and there is not spread/split serifs showing. So it is still a normal mint mark. When the spread is stronger it maybe listed if someone submits a coin for their files. Or they may say it is too minor to list. So I see nothing that jumps out at me on your coin. The one Albert posted shows a spread so it is a RPM. But the little notch just isn't strong enough to list on your coin. I know that if you can see that, when a RPM does come under you scope/glass, you will know it. I bet that you could also pick out hub doubling as well. Your eye is there. The problem is that that special find has not made it to you yet. When you do find one, it will leap right out at you and you will know it without question.
