I've been away for awhile, but I've still been working on a type set as time allows. I've become a little more comfortable picking raw coins that I think would receive a straight grade (no details) and I am interested to see what comments the community has about a few recent acquisitions. I'll do a new topic for each coin (since I think that is the preferred method--someone please correct me if not) Sorry the Obverse pic is a little fuzzy, hopefully the reverse gives a good enough impression. Thanks for looking! -Chris

VF35 wear grade ; cannot issue an opinion on the surfaces. Overall quite a nice type coin.

VF35 and lightly cleaned. Might take a 5 point hit if it grades problem-free.

Thanks, what are the indications of cleaning?

Quote: Thanks, what are the indications of cleaning? Primarily the obverse, look at the grime in the protected areas versus the "whiteness" elsewhere. It does not look harshly cleaned and would probably go as problem-free with a slight net for a light cleaning IMO.

@BH1964 OK, thanks. So I can spot harshly/moderately cleaned coins, but I guess still need to adjust my eye to spot lightly cleaned or old cleanings. I thought any type of cleaning was an automatic details grade, are you saying that some minor cleanings will just bring a lower (but problem-free) grade?
I have seen some coins in NGC/PCGS slabs with details grades that looked fine to me, but I have also seen (less often) coins that, to me, looked cleaned, in those same slabs.
Still learning...

Obverse could well have been wiped down at some point.
