I am looking into getting a book like the Red Book but for Canadian coins. I've seen the North American coin book with US, Canada and Mexico and felt like I wanted something with some more info. I did a few searches on the site and came up with Charlton's guide and the Charest book and was wondering if anyone who has used them would recommend one or the other. It seems like the Charlton guide is the more popular book and more readily available but since I've not seen it myself I don't know what to expect.

I have both of those books, and I think they complement each other. The Charest book has more info on varieties (and detailed pics), while I think the Charlton's listed values are closer to what sells.

I intend to use it for basically that purpose, a guide to use and get information to build myself a type set. I have picked up a few more recent issues of the specimen sets and a proof set in the past few years and have more recently become aware of some of the older designs. I really like the designs of pretty much all the Canadian coins I have seen and would love to own some nice examples myself. Maybe a second question is do either of these books cover a significant extra amount of coins such as early coinage, or coins widely used from foreign countries etc?

Here's a plug for a great book seller - https://www.abebooks.com. You can get many books for $1 or $2 + shipping. For less than $20 you can put together a basic library! You have to look through all of the listings until you find more recent ones. They have lots of older books (like from the late 90's) but mixed in you will find some current books. I just went and looked and found a 2006 North American Coins and Prices for $1 + $3.99 shipping. The books I've gotten from them have been old library reference books that were never used, so except for a library stamp and sticker, they are brand new.
