Hey everyone, I posted in the "bank strap results" thread that I picked up some ones at the bank on Friday for the purpose of trading at the town fair today, and I'm surprised by what happened. I had high hopes for helping businesses out, but here's what happened:

-5 refusals
-Of that, 4 of the vendors said they had enough bills but appreciated my help
-The 5th, however, was a bit surly about it and said something to effect of "I don't want your money"
After each and every one of these people said they were good, I asked them if they were sure because I just wanted to help them and get rid of my ones, which is like a win-win situation but they just suggested I ask someone else.

-The other 2 vendors were gracious about it and I exchanged 20 ones at each one. I think this worked so well because they had prices that could involve handing 4 ones out as change should someone pay with a 20 or similar.

I'm posting this because from what I've heard, most small business owners appreciate getting smaller bills, and I'm not sure if these results are an anomaly or not due to the weather (was not very crowded due to rain). If it was, that's great and I'll just try again next time there's a similar event to this, but if not, I'm just wondering where I might have better luck.

So my question for you all is, what kind of business would likely go through lots of smaller bills and appreciate my offer?

I own and operate a "specialty sandwich shop" and I am in need of smaller bills BUT I like to get them from the bank so that I can go through them before anyone else. What-Type-Of-Business-Would-Likely-Be-In-Need-Of-Smaller-Bills?

I work at a retail establishment, and end up going to the bank several times during the week to exchange large denomination currency for smaller denomination currency and coinage. If someone is paying their bill, and has a lot of $1's, I always welcome it. If someone walked up and asked if I needed to exchange large denomination currency for $1's, I'd be OK with that but I collect paper currency and am very familiar with it. Others may be suspicious, and not want to participate in the transaction.

One thing I was doing wrong may have been the fact I wanted to trade 10 ones for a ten and one of the cashiers actually said they had plenty of twenties and ones, but few fives and tens since people either paid in ones or broke a 20, so next time I figured a better approach would be to make an offer like 2 fives and 10 ones for a 20 since most businesses could at LEAST use the fives due to most cash customers using 20s and the fact that they don't get handed out as change.

Bars.

Those places live off of singles and fives.

Even better.

Use them to work on your people skills.

Find the cutest girl / guy you can working a cash register and talk them into the transaction.

I wouldn't go to a busy place as they won't have time.

Maybe try getting a haircut. Chatting up the hair cut lady with your proposed transaction during the haircut?

Well I'm following up to this thread after the events that happened today. I went to a culture fest at the county park, and this time, I took a different approach to trading my bills, and instead of hiding the fact that I marked them, I explained to everyone what I did and how you can track your money that way. That method worked like a charm, and here are the reactions I got:

"Wow, that's pretty cool."
Me: "I know, can we exchange like I give you 5 ones for a five or 10 for 10?"
Them: "Sure, I'll definitely give these bills out as change!"

One of the vendors said he was glad I had extra ones, so I doubled my offer to 20 ones and he gladly accepted. Everyone I did trade with received 5 or 10 marked bills in other cases.

However, there's always gonna be that ONE bad apple. I made sure to only go to the businesses without a line, and I engaged in conversation to gauge the mood of the person to see if they would be happy to trade. There was this one vendor and the guy running it seemed to be happy, so I did my usual explanation and asked to trade. His demeanor INSTANTLY changed and he said something like "NO, now get out of my line if you're not interested in anything!" That's definitely a way to guarantee that I won't be back!

I know you guys are gonna be saying stuff like "you're gonna find people like that" but I was well aware that I couldn't expect everyone to like the concept of my hobby before I arrived. I just didn't expect to get such a RUDE refusal there so I didn't even know what to say.

However, looking on the bright side, I only had 11 ones left upon getting home, and I received good reactions everywhere else, so today overall was very successful. I just wanted to post this to share my experience with non-Georger's views of my hobby and what you guys thought.
