I recently acquired a 2nd century low cost Denarius of Marcus Aurelius from Germany. The seller sent it FEDEX, and now I get a clearance delay message from them. Is it FEDEX or U.S Customs messing with me? They want a country of manufacturing proof? I've never had any issues in the last few years so I find this all odd. Anyone have issues like this? I thought a 2nd century Denarius was fine to import from Germany to the U.S? Any thoughts?

I buy from Germany quite often, but have not yet had this problem.

I think it's less the "Germany" part and more the "2nd century denarius" part that is the problem: it's so old that it falls under "cultural heritage" laws.

What the mint is? It could be from one of the countries that are very aggressive about their cultural history, like Bulgaria or Cyprus. (I don't think Germany is one of these, incidentally.)

It's most likely being held by US Customs pending inspection and making sure the it is not violation of import laws. A few years back I had a coin from Belgium held by Customs for a few months. I finally received it opened and resealed with US Customs stickers.

Excepting one Canadian seller, every coin I have imported into the US had the customs declaration fudged. The amount of fudge ranged from vague "old coins" descriptions to the coins being hidden in a secret compartment of a CD case in my most recent lot.

Fortunately, I have never had anything seized or held excessively.

Thanks for the feedback. I called the winners at FEDEX and they just wanted to know where the coin came from, and I told them Roman and they released the coin for delivery tomorrow.
