Hello all. I'm not really versed in the world of coin collecting, but my girlfriend found an interested coin while working at a bank. She has a roll of Adams dollars fresh from the mint and one side of the roll had Adams face while the other end of the roll just has a blank coin.
I wasn't able to find any info about this anywhere, and I was just wondering if it was a common thing.
I figured some of the experts on this forum would certainly have SOME info for me.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Could be a blank planchet, could be a number of things. Has the roll been opened? Could be that the reverse or Obverse was not stamped. Got a picture?

It could be a blank planchete which is worth more then $1 but not sure exactly how much. Or it could have just the edge lettering and date which would be worth considerably more $$$. I wouldn't open the roll, since you aren't into coin I would keep it as-is and sell it on ebay or some other auction.

If you happen the roll and spot edge lettering you should definatel submit it to a third party grading service.

I agree, submit it to a reputable grading service such as NGC or PCGS.

Am I correct in assuming that the roll came from a bank and is a solid roll of new Adams dollars? If that is correct, then you have one of two things- it could be a blank planchet which is the metal round that is eventually struck into a coin. These do not escape the Mint much anymore and a golden dollar planchet(which have only been made since 2000) is worth about $100. There is no difference between the planchet of a Presidential dollar and a Sacagawea dollar. Another possibility is that you have a blank planchet with edge lettering. The edge lettering is a separate process from the minting of the coin. This can only be a Presidential dollar since those are the only coins with edge lettering. These are very rare and only a few have been discovered. If you have one of these, you should get it certified by a third party grading service( TPG) for authenticity. One of them, PCGS, offered a $2500 finders fee last year for the first one found http://www.pcgs.com/articles/articl...d=313&type=1Either way, you more than likely to have something of value and you will need to carefully open the roll to verify what it is. Open the roll over a towel or another soft surface and do not touch the face of the coin, only the edge. Do you have a digital camera or scanner? if so disclaimer: there is always a possibility that it is damaged or a brass disc or something else of dubious nature. If my earlier assumptions are correct, the chances of that are greatly reduced since you should be the first customer to have them. If the roll is mixed, then I would retract my statements and definitely want to see pictures. Also, if you have a scale accurate to 0.1g, then the appropriate weight should be 8.1 grams.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I haven't actually SEEN the roll, but she told me about it. It's at her parent's place. It is a roll from the mint, a red white and blue unopened roll. She said that the side you can see is completely blank. I assume it's a blank planchet as I found a picture of one and she said that's what it looked like, though we still don't know what the other side would reveal.
I'll get her to go get it sometime soon so I can get a picture of it. Would it be wise to keep it rolled, or would that not help the value at all? She's calling a guy today to see if he has any info.
Thanks again.

I'd get the roll ASAP. You should definitely open the roll and look for edge lettering. Even without lettering, it's worth over $100.

Awesome info guys. Thanks a lot. I'm trying to get her to go get the roll soon. She's hesitant to take the coin out of the roll. Should she keep it in there? If anything I thought it might be useful for identifying which coin it really is in the event that it's completely blank.
I found a blank planchet adams dollar on some site from searching google, they're asking $899 for it which I'm sure is steep. I emailed them and asked if they wanted to buy it, just to see how much they would offer. I'm not really expecting much, just figured I'd see what they said.
As I said before, I'm still going to contact a guy I found from search the PNG web site. Look at me all learning about coins!
Thanks again for all the very helpful info.

Here are some pictures of the roll. I got a response from that site. They told me that the prices have changed and they had changed the coin on their site to reflect that. They now sell it for $299. I don't know if she wants to sell it or not, but I'm getting into this whole coin thing just from reading around on this site.

Jonah,
That is just an end cap that goes on the side of the roll that is towards the bottom of the box. I usually just throw those away. I'll take it if you don't want it.
Seriously, tell her to sell it NOW! The price will, without a shadow of a doubt, drop in the near future. This type of error has a better chance of holding some value but the early sales of these should be the spike in the price. Sell it as a roll so you know what Pres. and mint it is.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm going to see if she wants to sell it to this site or try to sell it online. Do you think there would be a market for this on ebay?

Great find! I'd definately leave it in the original mint roll if all you care about is making some $$$. I'd put it on ebay with a line about "who knows if there's another in this roll"....hehehehehehe....people will bid it up.
