Beautiful specimen Dave... looks high grade and I love the little bit of toning. Sometimes that's all it takes to make a coin stand out amongst others.
Your V23B looks to be an early die state without the clashing and cracks. Check the 1883-O VAM-1I listing and see if it clicks. I have one very lovely heavily toned V23B in the same die state that I swear I can see the dot, but with the toning it is near impossible to be certain. Anyways... LVA's plate photo of the ear matches that of the VAM-23 series, and the V1I is very highly coveted amongst us 1883-O collectors ;) Kind of like the V1C3!
Grats on filling a slot in your 1883-O collection my friend.

Thanks Nate, I was thrilled to say the least when I got this one in hand. I missed one about a month ago that was not nearly as nice as this one. I think this one may be a VEDS of 23B as there are a couple of polish lines to the left of the die "scratch line" that could be mistaken for PMD if they didn't extend all the way from the Eagle's wing to the arrow shaft. I would imagine these would not last for many strikes. I have to ask where the dot is located? As for your 23B, WOW! That coin is spectacular.

Could you get a shot of those die scratch lines you are talking about? I know mine has them too, but not sure if they are same strength as yours or not. Your coin appears to be un-clashed, so I am assuming yours are stronger. You can kind of see them on the VAM-23B page photos. I just sent you an email regarding that dot... there is a link in the email. Quote: As for your 23B, WOW! That coin is spectacular. Thanks! It's in ANACS 63 now ;)

Here's a crummy close up of the die scratches. I really loathe my USB microscope...

I see the main die scratch and two lines parallel and to the left of that. Are those what you are referring to? Photo is pretty good, just not sure if that is what you were talking about. Did you shoot all of your photos with USB microscope, or just the last one? The ones above are VERY nice pics!

Yes, the two lines to the left of the main die scratch are also die scratches. They begin and end on the field at the devices. This last photo was the only one using my USB scope. I would have used my camera but you really need to catch the scratches from an angle to see them. Quote: The ones above are VERY nice pics! Thank you, my photography set up is a Canon XS camera body mounted to a Canon bellows, mounted to a converted microscope stand. Full size images are using a 75MM EL-Omegar lens and the close ups are a 50MM EL-Nikkor lens.
