Recently I came across a 1978 D silver like penny the edges are very smooth and feels lighter than a regular penny. Does anyone know what this is. I am knowledge when it comes to coins but in 1978 the coins were made of copper alloy. This is very puzzling to me it doesn't feel like a penny or one that has been altered or plated and the D looks like it is filled.if anyone knows anything please let me know I think that these maybe penny's that were made by mistake if that's the case then theses could be extremely valuable.

Gotta see pictures to know what you've got, but the Mint did not make any cents like that other than in copper.

I agree, we need pictures and a weight would be helpful. Most likely, some third party externally coated a cent with silver or zinc.

It is most likely plated. " feels lighter than a regular penny." is too subjective. Unless you have trained and had a lot of practice judging weights five grams is about the smallest difference in weight you can detect by had. A LOT of people find plated cents and come online saying they feel lighter than a normal cent, then when they finally actually weigh them they are normal or even a little over. So the first thing you need to do is get an accurate weight, preferably to two decimal places.

I came across one of these last night-a 1973 D was 3.1 grams and a weak magnetic attraction, that told me it was plated
