Howdy, I am new to the foreign money collecting. I haven't actively collected in, like what, 30 years. I was recently gifted some WWII artifacts by a friend of a friend. I received Japanese coins ( see other post) and bills. 59 10 yen bills, to be exact. Most are of similar condition as photo. Any info., value, collectability, etc., greatly appreciated.

Looks like 1930 10 Yens (P-40). I think they are like $10-20 USD or so Uncirculated. Could be wrong on value though.

These are running about $15-$20 in AU condition on ebay in consecutive runs, singles for a bit more. Not a rare note by any means, but very attractive and a classic design.

You'll need one for your collection, of course, and do put 5 or 10 choice copies away for the grandchildren to sell in 50 years. Get some mylar 5x8 sleeves and treat them nicely.

The others you can sell to a shop or put them on ebay yourself.

Saw this post on your banknotes and your other post on your coins. Very nice. Your friend's friend was very generous.

Yeah, the family was moving across country, downsizing, and just gave me the coins along with other WWII items. I am more of a history buff, that's why I ended up with the coins. It wasn't even the initial interest. The person that acquired the items fought in the awful battle on Tarawa. He was a Navy medical officer assigned with the Marines.

Tarawa was where the Marines and the Navy learned that a few days of bombarding dug-in and hardened Japanese strongpoints, even with large-caliber naval rifles and 500-pound bombs, was not enough to cripple enemy defenses. They also learned to chart the reefs around the atolls and pay more attention to tidal waters, and send in Destroyers for close-in gunfire support. And, to triple stocks of blood plasma, they were not really prepared for nearly 4,000 casualties, despite the planning estimates.

I've met a couple of Tarawa veterans, as far as I'm concerned, every single one of them deserves the Silver Star just for being there, it was literally a hellhole beyond description or belief, to me.

ShareBear: friends' friends are always generous! The problem is that friends (ours) are usually not :)
