Hi

We found what we think is an old coin in the garden. Its very beaten up and fairly hard to see the detail. However, it seems there is latin around it with a cross on one side and royal crest the other, central flower with crown above etc.

If it is indeed a coin any help identifying it would be awesome.

Thanks.

With the "royal crest" design, my first guess would be Nuremberg jeton. But it could be something else.

Don't know enough to say any more, sorry.

Looks to me like three fleur de lis alternating with crowns and a central rosette on the obv and an imperial orb on the rev. The crowns each have three annulets, which is interesting.

Perhaps you ought to metal detect in the garden for more. This most definitely is a Jeton of Nuremburg and probably from Hans Krawinckel or his son, circa 1585 - 1615. The orb is a bezoar representing long life and the legend on the Rose and Lis' side may spell out the makers name. The first letter seems to be "H" If you want to find out exactly see the reference book by Michael Mitchner on Jetons of Nuremburg, one of a series he did on objects in the British museum. Jetons came in sets of many dozen and were used to count by folks with limited arithmetic skills and in Roman numerals. They would have been used on a counting board, a European version of the abacus by a reichpfennigmeister. What do you suppose needed counting in your garden back 400 years ago?

Thanks for the help everyone, really interesting to hear what you've said.

Our house was built in the 16th century and was primarily a barn until later in time. Used by some simple Tudor farm folk? Interesting to think so!
