As I can I'm starting to add more Medieval coins to my collection. Here is a small example of an Obol of Alfonso X, King of Castle, Leon, and Galicia from May 30 1252 until his death on April 4 1284. He was also King of the Romans from 1257-1275. BI Obol Alfonso X The Wise (el Sabio) 1221-1284 14mm x .4g x 11h Obverse: Castle within double square border Reverse: Lion standing left

I'm very glad to have some company over here in the medieval section of numismatics, although I suppose I may now have some additional competetion when purchasing coins. Obols are tiny coins. There aren't many gimungous coins from this time period in Europe, but you should be able to get some in the 20 mm diameter range. I like your posted coin. Mostly legible with plenty of detail remaining.

This is a true parlant coin... The obverse has the legend CA-ST-EL-LE around a castle; in spanish Castilla is the feminine form of "castillo" (castle) and means something like "land plenty of castles". The reverse has the legend LE-GI-ON-IS around a lion; in spanish León means lion, this name comes from the fact that the capital city of this kingdom was born as home of a roman legion, the Legio VI "victrix" and after several years of the Legio VII "Gemina". The original name "Legión" was corrupted to "León" due to the close sound of this two words in spanish.

Nice OP coin. I have often thought about taking the leap into mediaeval coinage but have not done so...yet.

Spanish midle age coinage of the cristian kingdoms was worse than those of others kingdoms in Europe due to the fact that Iberic kingdoms were in permanent wars against moors. Their land were plundered, their peoples captured and sold as slaves in north africa by the islamic armies... This lasted seven centuries till the cristian prevailed over several weakened small islamic states. Sometimes a cristian kingdom was allied with an islamic kingdom against a cristian kingdom, there were several civil wars... seven centuries of very "interesting times" signified that spanish kings were always short of money so "spanish pennies" (dineros) had only a third part of silver (vellon coinage) and in several times only a fourth part
