Newbie here!

Please take a look at this roman coin. Is this coin worth grading? From the written info I have with the coin, it is from BC109; maybe someone can tell me more about it. Also, I see NGC grades Ancients, but does PCGS? Thanks for the help!

This is a very nice Roman Republic denarius issued by M. Tullius in 119 BC. Collectors of ancient coins don't really like to have their coins slabbed. This is a nice example with an excellent strike. I would give it a grade of about extra fine.

Thanks for enhancing the images. I can see why collectors would rather handle the coins raw. Would there be any investment advantage to having it graded or do ancient coins sell for similar prices whether raw or graded?

Welcome.

I think that's an attractive specimen. As for whether it's "worth grading" I imagine you're going to find there're divided opinions on the issue of certifying ancients. Sometimes it's necessary if they're rare or important, especially if they're in the process of being sold or auctioned. But many just abhor these being "entombed", and if they get one that's been slabbed, they're apt to crack it out. Personally, I do put mine in Airtite holders for protection, but that still leaves them technically "raw".

I have bought 2 slabbed ancients. They had a decisive meeting with my hammer. None of my coins will ever reside in plastic coffins. Also, keep in mind that NGC does NOT guarantee authenticity. They state such on their website.

Welcome to CCF @genericnewbie! Thanks for sharing your coin.

I think that you will find, at least here on CCF, and perhaps more generally across most collectors that slabbing ancients isn't the advantage that it may be in dealing with other areas of numismatics (US modern coins comes to my mind first). Even there, you have both camps, but my point is that with ancients the "don't slab" camp seems to be more prevalent. For this type of coin, I'm only purchasing from dealers that I trust and so the slab is a bit extraneous.

Thanks for all the replies. It is my only ancient coin and I think keeping it in an Air-Tite would be the best option. There is something about holding a raw coin in your hand that is over 2000 years old :)
