Hi,

So this was found in a local shop. The coin was very very corroded, and so, I had to clean it in order to be able to ID what I thought it might be (1888/7).

However, the weight is now a good .12 grams below 3.11.

2 questions:

1) Can cleaning reduce the weight of a coin by that much?

2) Also, obviously, what do you think about it being an 1888/7?

Notice the would-be Cud on United and first part of states.

Still visible, and lines up with diagnostics.

There is a crossbar visible in the 8 though...

This doesn't disqualify it at all, but usually, it shows up only in higher grades.

Date's too far to the left. Not sure what you have, I can't match it.

Yeah, I thought that too about the date. I wasn't sure if date position is an absolute must with Indian Head cents like with Morgans.

The Cud actually continues (less-so) all the way through states.

I've checked the literature and indianvarieties, and came up fruitless on any other overdate listing.

It's not high enough grade to send in or anything, but it could be very tentative evidence of a possible unclassified variety.

If so, I hope someone finds a more viable one out there!

I agree, it is not an 1888/7. Reverse is also wrong for the variety. It could possibly be an S5b (1888,88/88). I can't be positive, but it is the closest I can find to your coin.

I don't know a lot about IH but lots of info here http://indiancent.wikispaces.com/1888
Don't see the possible Cud and the weight is within mint tolerances.

Doesn't look like it to me either, but looks like you did a great restoration job.

It looks like PMD from 12 to 10 o'clock on the 8 digit.

My guess is if you inspect this depressed area from a cross sectional perspective, this aforementioned altered area would be thickest near the top tip part of this 8 digit.

This top thicker section seems to have taken a right to left directional ding as evidenced by the perceived tapering down in the SW direction as it appears on the 12 to 10 o'clock vector etc.
