Hello, Can anyone here help me out with more information on this 1998 Thomas Cook Bankers 1 Euro coin that I happened to find in a mixed token/coin lot that I bought. I can't seem to find many that are for sale or sold. There is one listed on ebay (item# 152068883851) right now with a $360 buy it now price or best offer. I only found a couple others online and they were high priced as well. I'm just wondering why it's that valuable and what the production numbers are for it. I've been searching for a few days now and cant seem to find anything. Thanks!

Euro coins and notes weren't released until 2002, so it's a fantasy token. I looked around on ebay and found one like it, with a different "obverse" but the same "reverse", for $250: 162044022269Nice find!

Hibernias: Thanks for the reply. I think I read somewhere that the Euro wasn't in production yet in 1998 but it was agreed upon. I did see that item too with the different obverse and it was a high priced one too. I just cant seem to find any information on how many were made. I'm guessing there weren't many produced and that's why it's listed for so much. There's very little information that I can find on it so if anyone else can help out I would appreciate anything you can tell me about it. I'm going to list it on ebay soon and just want to learn a little more about it before doing so. Thanks again for the help!

I think that was when the Euro was used in online purchases and in bank accounts. The original Eurozone countries did not pull off a 100% changeover until 2002, but some countries (France, Spain, Netherlands, etc.) had Euro coins with 1999 dates.

This is a fantasy coin, as a travel agent like Thomas Cook never would get permission to release legal currency here in Europe. :)
Besides, the Euro only became legal tender in banking in 1999 as an accounting currency and released as circulation currency from January 1st, 2002. Minting started already in 1999 to facilitate the transition to the new currency. Coins dated 1999 and 2000 are not uncommon. For example, France minted over 1.5 billion 1 Euro cent coins to be used in circulation before the Euro was put into circulation.
Quite some countries actually issued 'introduction sets'. For example, every Dutch person over the age of 12 got a coupon to get one from the government, in order to get used to the new currency. This is the kind of set that dohcollector is looking for with his Belgium millennium trilogy, I believe. You can be assured that you will get coins from 1999, 2000 and 2001 in those sets, but there is a good chance to find those dates in circulation as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I don't know a whole lot about foreign coins so I appreciate the help. I think I'm just going to list it on ebay and see what happens. If anyone can tell me how many were made, I would love to know since I can't seem to find any information on it. Thanks again!!

Just as additional info: There were only five countries that minted coins dated 1999-2000-2001: Belgium, France, Finland, Netherlands and Spain as well as Monaco (2001). The coins from the other countries are all from 2002. Greece minted additional coins abroad that carry special mint signs.
