Which do you prefer? PL or UNC business strikes? Are there any large price differencs between the two? Does your collection of a single coin series conists of both or only either or?

I only collect circulation coins, so PL would be out of place in my collection. But that's just me. Then again, I don't go out of my way for UNC, either. It's the thrill of the hunt that drives me.

I was noticing that UNC business strike coins were less expensive than those of PL counterparts on ebay.

There are also some rare business strike varieties that weren't produced in PL sets.

Gary,
Proof-like coins are struck by specially prepared polished dies and blanks with careful handling, presumably taken one by one to avoid the "bag marks" found on regular business strikes. They are single strike as per regular coins. Cameo (frosty relief) coins occur on the first few coins produced per each new die, hence their rarity and value as they approach Proof quality.
Proof coins are the highest quality finish handled as above + multiple, slow strikes to provide frosty and sharp relief on mirror surface (ultra heavy cameo) that is standard on Proof coins. Variants exist such as reverse Proof.
Personally, and to answer the original question, By far I prefer PL, Specimen and Proof coins over business strikes. Business MS-65+ strikes can be quite valuable if certified of course. Rarity aside, the PL or Proof equivalent for a given coin is, in my own personal view, far more beautiful and appealing...

This reply is NOT exactly on topic, but is ball-park, so I'll ask. Where can one get info from the mint, as to subscriptions for Proof, and/or PL specimun,( SP), )(UNC sets)? Thanks, Dick

andre1621, thank you for the link. I have that on my tool-bar! I have visited there many times, however, I am looking for a comtact with the RCM, or the mint in Ottawa, or is it Winnepeg? At any rate, what I am after is the samt type of annual pruchase policy, as the US mint has, for buying Proof sets, Uncirculated sets, etc, as we do here in the USA. Can you help? Dick

The shipping rate from the RCM is somewhat high compared to the US Mint.

nds76, I kept trying to reply to your post, and kept getting bounced, because I wasn't logged in. I can't keep logged in! I have done everything I can think of, even registering again as a new mwmber, and even that is not working! Back to the point: I want info from the mint regarding the prices of Proof sets, PL speci. sets, and UNC sets, (business, nor for circulation). Dick
