Hi,

I'm Canadian and new to the forum and also new to the interest of coins and paper money, main focus Canadian, just started exploring about it all in the last week. I can see how fun and addictive it is LOL

I thought I'd break the ice to say hello to you all ... and start with asking a question.

I have some older pennies, but the ones I'm wondering about, this minute, are two 1974 ones that look very different from each other in colouring/material, one is like the old dark matte-er pennies, and the other is more coppery colour and has a large spot between the "1" and the rim as though the plating did not take. The spot shows the matte silvery colour like slugs are.

Does anyone know if they used two different versions of materials for pennies in 1974?

(yes, am new to learning the terminology too and before you ask for pics, I'm not able to take and post pics at this time, sorry :( LOL)

Thanks,

Dottir.

As far as I know there were no different materials used in the 1974 cents.
I would say you have planchet peeling, I have a few coins that way.

BTW... Welcome to the forum.

Hi Shafta9A,

Thanks for the welcome :)

I have seen that odd missing spot/s on pennies before in the past, extremely rare mind you, can probably count on one hand how many times I've seen it in decades! and always wondered why it was there, and how ;) Makes me think that the top metal just didn't "take" in that spot, rather than peeling or ... or I guess something eroded the surface in that spot somehow. I don't know ;) Thank you for your comments ....

Dottir.

A photo would be interesting, but I'll also guess it's some kind of planchet delamination. It may have happened when an air bubble in the bronze ingot was flattened when the coin stock was rolled. Then, when the coin was struck, the force peeled off the weaker layer, leaving a hole or strip of loose metal...every case is different. Nice find!

And welcome here!

Hi Kurt,

I could have sworn I replied to this earlier ... must be half asleep LOL

I think from comments here and from browsing a bit that its a laminating problem when the coin was made. I don't know why my two 1974 pennies should look so different in colour and shine/lack of (matte) comparing the two. The brighter coppery shine one is the one with the laminate problem.

I think that coppery penny was not fully centered either, unless the edge has worn down over the years explaining the unevenness (bottom edge thinner than top) and a slight lip that does not go completely around the coin, as though it were maybe "double punched" (if thats the correct term)

Wish I could just take a pic ... oh well :(

Thanks for the welcome ;)

Dottir.
