I really want this to be a true doubling, but I have a feeling it may be just a MD. Thoughts?

Mostly what you are seeing is Die Deterioration. This happens on devices edges that are closest to the rim. LIBERTY on the left side, Date on the right side and all other devices on the tops or bottoms between the device and the rim.
IE: on the 'ER" on AMERICA you can see the 'E' showing it between the top of the device and rim, but also the center leg of the 'E' towards the rim. This is not a sever case, but your eyes are seeing it, so it want to know what it is. Common as the dies age. We see this more often like this on the single squeeze dies because of the lower profile of the devices. On the multi-hubbed examples from the past it show more as distortion on the edge of the device near the rim.

Note how on the VLDS examples show that distortion the most. (as the die ages)
On the single squeeze we see it more as affecting the field more than the device.
