Oh Dayum!! That's one of the shows I attend once in awhile, and thats about the time I would be there, glad I missed that one though.. Shame that happened since it's one of the best monthly shows in the region. But I can't blame the guy for carrying an illegal handgun.. I heard a few years ago a dealer at that show was followed out of the parking lot and robbed of over 100k in coins.. There's no point arguing over this one guys.. The points hear are clear; the dealer had an illegal handgun, it "accidentally" went off, I think we can all agree and sympathise that the dealer had every reason to feel the need to carry to protect his valuable coins. Oddly enough I was recently thinking about how many dealers at these shows I attend are packing heat.. Great article thanks for sharing it..

Dave I'm quite sure you and Chute are responsible gun owners but in this day and age I'm also quite sure that there are people that have no business even carrying one. You've read the story's . It's seems like a weekly thing now where a momma is shot by a toddler that grabs a gun out of her purse or a gun that's hidden under the front seat that a kid gets hold of.

Quote: it "accidentally" went off Guns don't "accidently" do anything on their own; there was human intervention that caused the gun to fire

Raymo, I see your point. And I agree that if you are not trained and practiced in carrying a firearm, it may be better to error on the side of safety. And I certainly agree that some people just shouldn't have guns. Just as some people shouldn't drive cars. Part of my knee jerk reaction is that when bad things happen, involving firearms, governments propose new laws that only affect the law abiding. It is easy for me to imagine legislation that forbids carrying a firearm with a round in the chamber. Here is where I see a problem. "allegedly accidentally discharged while it was in his pocket" If I were the officer in charge I would have tested the gun owner's hand for powder residue. It is important to determine if the owner inadvertently pulled the trigger. Of if someone will sue the manufacturer for mental stress because the product was unsafe. Because firearms are an emotional issue, it is important to report the facts. Unfortunately, our press is either unqualified or disinclined to do this in many cases, and it leads to general misconceptions.

To carry an Unloaded pistol is pretty much a waste of time. To carry one with a round in the chamber is irresponsible and dangerous. It takes just as much time to locate and use the safety as it does to cock the weapon, So carrying a pistol in the loaded state with nothing in the breach would be the safest and most useful option.

One hand may be busy or damaged. You might be trying to keep someones head above water or compressing the bleeding. One hand may have been hit by another bullet, or broken in a fall. There are many ugly situations that do not come with a warning and time is an important factor. If it were a good idea to keep an empty chamber, Law Enforcement would do it. Almost any handgun made in the last 100 years is perfectly safe to carry with a round in the chamber.

My grandfather always said "There are no accidents, only negligence." You mileage may vary.

Someone swithched off the metal detector at the entrance to the show. Some schools now have metal detector entry.
Wouldn't it be better if we never had guns? A lot less people never have been shot (wars included).
British police do not carry guns, and there is a lot fewer people that are the victim of gunshot in London, than in Chigago.

Quote: there is a lot fewer people that are the victim of gunshot in London, than in Chigago Does it matter if you are killed with a sword, spear, knife, club, fists or a gun? you are still dead Murders and killings in England and Wales have increased to their highest level for five years, figures show. The 14% increase in the year to September 2015 was largely due to a high number of deaths in June when 75 people were killed in one month, the Office for National Statistics found. Knife crime was up 9% with 27,487 offences, while gun crime was up 4% to 4,994 offences. The latter increase was mostly driven by a rise in gun offences in London, the ONS said. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35372940

Quote: Wouldn't it be better if we never had guns? A lot less people never have been shot (wars included). People were killing people long before guns were invented. The media makes out a shooting to be the end of the world scenario and tries to "scare" the easily led masses to believe all the evil in the world revolves around guns. The truth is crazy is crazy. If someone has their mind made up to kill someone they will use whatever they need to car, knife, gun, rock, poison, ect.
