I ran across this notice dated July 12, 2005, on a site called "Coin News from Sol Taylor." Was there ever such a series? If not, why not? I think it would have been a HUGELY SUCCESSFUL idea . As I think about it, our US Mint hasn't had many huge successes in recent memory. We want our Coins from Space! Jack COINS FROM SPACE: The House of Representatives passed a bill July 12 authorizing a 10-coin series in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The series includes a $50 gold coin (1 troy oz.) depicting the sun and nine $1 silver coins with symbols representing the exploration of each planet. All goverment agencies that own flown spacecraft are instructed to deliver gold, silver, copper and other metal samples from them to the mint; traces of the flown metal will be blended into all coins in the series. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Precious metals recovered from decommissioned spacecraft .... Am I reading that correctly? Sounds cool but I'm not sure how much the coins would have to cost for this to be economically viable.

I buy very few modern coins, but that would be a series I'd buy.

That coin program legislation was not fully passed and signed so it never came into existence. The US Mint has no say over the subject of commemorative coin programs, they can only strike coins that have been approved through the legislative process.

mox - I'm the same. The reason we don't buy modern series is 1) they make bazillions of any new design, and 2) the offerings of late, stop just short of being either "sterile", or just plain UGLY! I've read this notice over and over, and every time I find myself with a big stupid grin on my face. It just seems like such a wonderful idea - What the heck happened? Jack

It surely did pass the House of Representatives. Explain what "fully passed" means. Is this something that could be revived? Jack

House >>> Senate >>> Presidential signature
I seriously doubt it would be revived now since it was intended for the 50th anniversary of NASA. Even if it were to be revived, it would still have to be voted on twice and signed(the original House vote is now null and void). It is also worth noting that the commemorative coin legislation pipeline is full through 2018(two per year) and there are numerous bills waiting to be voted on, including one for the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

Thanks biokemist6. That pretty much says it all. I'll add this to my growing list of disappointments with our current, and inept, politicians. They may hold the offices, but they certainly DON'T represent the desires/will of "the people." (end of "potential" political diatribe). Jack
