Been wanting to get my first gold coin for a long time and I finally did; took care of the key to the series first. This will take me years to finish, but I've been wanting to get started for a few years already!

Nice! There are some really good designs in this series, and the National Park coin that will be coming out next week is a great addition to the series.

Collect these coins for the enjoyment. For most issues all they have going for them is the melt value. I have collected them for years, and have all of them in Proof. None of my coins are slabbed except for baseball $5 from which I was shut out because of the way they were sold. A collector was kind enough to sell one to me in a PCGS slab.

I own a lot of them for less than melt because I have been at it for so many years. The collector premium on these coins can be fleeting.

I remember when this coin was issued. I had purchased the Rosevelt just prior and did not have the funds for this one. Prices have dropped substantially from the highs of 2011. I had sold my Rosevelt then for $850 and bought a replacement last year for $338. This one too is on my radar as are the spouse coins.

It seems that the Mint reserves the simpler, cleaner (and my favorite) designs for the $5 issues. Almost certainly that's because of the smaller space constraints with which they have to work but I'd really love to see these cool designs blown up on a larger coin.

That said I do love the US Marshals $5 and Mark Twain $5 coins released in the last 2 years.

Wow I have many $5 gold commemoratives but not that one. I know you paid a pretty penny for that one. Been looking for one at FMV price but can't seem to find one. I know I will eventually find one. You really did well in getting that one cause it is truly a Key to the gold. Have fun in your endeavors because you have a daunting task ahead of you. I still working on my complete series of Modern Commemoratives.

The 1997 Jackie Robinson gold coin ($205 in 1997) at 9% interest annual compound would equal $1054 after 19 years ; roughly today's selling price for MS69. Better than the bank or CD's.
The 1987 Constitution gold coin ($175 in 1987) at 2.5% interest annual compound would be $358, again today's selling price ... about like money in the bank.
But then there is the inflation and loss of use aspect to consider. Collect what you enjoy, gain education, and above all else, have fun !

I think that some of the best designs have been on the half dollars with the $5 gold pieces second. One of my favorites is the Statue of Liberty half dollar with the immigrant family arriving at New York Harbor. Unfortunately the facts that that coin is considered to be so common and struck on a base metal clad planchet, leave not getting any respect, like the late Rodney Dangerfield.

Some of the more disappointing designs have been on the silver dollars. There is so much space available, and yet a lot of it is not well used in my opinion.

Years ago I posted my opinions about the modern commemorative designs on another blog. It might be interesting to do that again.

@billjones -

I completely agree about the 1986 Liberty half dollar. That is a very strong design and I would have really liked seeing it in silver. Back in February, I bought 4 proofs and 2 business strikes for $11.50 shipped on ebay. I carry one of the unc's as a pocket piece (along with a couple other coins).

Would love to hear your "opinions about the modern commemorative designs".

I got back into coin collecting around 2005 buying several of the $5 gold commems on ebay, and then some of the new releases from the mint. Last one I bought was the medal of honor issue. Gold's recent spike has halted further purchases. Lately I've been picking up some of the $1 silver issues that I like, which turns out to be only around 25% of the issues.

I've vented about this on other threads as well, but can you all believe there are now two silver dollars with old faithful?!?! Sure, the 1999 Yellowstone $1 makes sense, but then to do it again on this year's National Park $1.
