The 40% coins are actually "clad"- there are two outer layers of higher silver percentage (80% I think) and a core of lower silver content (maybe 20%). Total silver content comes out to 40%. This is why you can see a faint copper color on the edges, but it is noticeably different than a normal copper/nickel coin... Report this Post to the Staff

The outer cladding layer is 80% silver 20% copper, the inner core is 79.1% copper, 20.9% silver. While the total silver content is 40%, the coins effectively look like 80% silver coins.
