My problem is I want to create an image of a coin that is shaped like a bent cotter pin(split pin).

I need to produce an image of a 17th century Ceylon Silver Larin (fishhook shaped). Because of its shape it will only lie on one of its two sides with the result the struck part of the coin can't be viewed. Does any one have any suggestions.

So far the only options I have come up with is to set my macro rig so the camera with Mamiya 645 bellows is mounted horizontally. In this configuration I would use tilt to get the larin in focus. I should add I want to create a 3d video for use in a presentation so I believe with using tilt in this fashion I may find the stacking won't work particularly well.

The other option I have thought off is suspending the larin using black cotton thread so that its shape is still evident and the outside struck surface can be seen( so it would be suspended at a 45 degree angle with respect to the camera sensor). However the image stack would have to be very large. My guess is 200 or more. Has any one any other ideas or experience that could assist? At the moment only suspending the coin with cotton thread seems to have merit.

Cool Coin.

Last year I posted a GIF animation of a lettered edge coin. Maybe an animation instead of a standard photo is what you want. I put the coin in a plastic stand and slowly rotated it taking an image at each stop. here is a small section. I made the GIF using GIMP 2.

Place the coin in a delicate clamp with felt or some soft liner. Then do the rotation. Take smaller size photos, I think less than 50 not 200. The above is less than 200K. If you compress the video only the moving portion is changed the background remains

Using the Olympus OMD-Em10II with the 60mm macro I took a 50 shot stack. I used cotton to help position the larin at 30 degrees. You can see the cotton thread in the resultant photo. I needs more work. I produced a "3d" video but have no idea of how to post it here.

This is very much a test of concept shot:

I was definitely thinking way too complicated. I got out a white back light. Laid the larin on it...tilted the camera. 50 shots ( focus bracketing with the Olympus) and this is the result:
