I believe this to be a 1881-S VAM-54b LDS. I do not see many on the PCGS,ANACS,NGC population reports. Rarity-7? 6? Opinions on grade if you can. 63PL?

What do the experts think? Thank you for your opinions!! RK

Are you KIDDING me. I've been looking for a broken bird for a while and that's a

The obverse looks PL but the reverse may not make it. Tuff to tell from the pics

@ Cascade, yes the obverse looks to me to be PL...hard to photograph and the reverse is not PL, just nice.
I almost threw this on the Bay, but louped it and saw the lower die break. upon investigation I saw the full die break and diagnostics for what I think is the LDS 54-B.

I think it is worth sending in, but will wait for other opinions.

different pics, don't know if any better.

Very nice VAM find!

I would say MS63 would be about right. Since only the obverse shows the PL field I'm not sure it would make full PL.

Great find! I'd suggest a trip to PCGS for it. Top POP currently is MS-65. That one looks to have an outside chance of making it. PG

Update;

Coin is off to ANACS. Should be back 3-4 weeks since I sent a few others in.

I showed the coin to a few fellow collectors, they thought it would grade MS63, obverse PL.

we shall see....

I will post pics when it comes back.

Cool. Keep us updated. I'm pulling for you! I'm at 63 obv pl as well I just hope thats cabinet friction and it doesn't get a 58. That would be tragic but still an awesome coin either way RK!

Wow, that's great! Now, I would see if it will cross at the same grade or better at PCGS. I'm happy for you!

Here's the most recent one in PCGS 64 that sold in January at heritage for $470. Seems like the broken bird has been slowly declining in price for the last few years from researching sold listings. Wonder why. Must be the drag that most all vams have been facing in recent years.

Yeah most VAMs have come down quite a bit in "value" with the exception of the extreme rarities or extremely fun varieties that are tough to find.

Congrats on finding a "Broken Bird" and getting it into a problem-free holder!

I've had a few coins come back from ANACS as "OBV DMPL" so if the OBV really is PL I wonder why it is not on the holder. I guess they either only do that with one-sided DMPLs (no PLs), or they just did not see what they needed to see for the PL designation. Doesn't matter really, a 54B in 64 holder is already a fantastic find ;)
