Here is a 1907 No Periods variety Indian $10 gold. This piece does not have the motto, "In God we trust," which was at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt thought that is was blasphemous to mention The Deity on money because money could be used for immoral activities such as gambling and prostitution. Congress did not agree with the president and had the motto placed on the new St. Gaudens designs in 1908. This No Periods variety was the first $10 gold Indian piece that was issued for general circulation. The previous coins, with the periods, had had technical problems that prevented their wide spread distribution. Henry Hering, who was Augustus St. Gaudens' liaison to the mint, prepared the models with some possible minor adjustments by Charles Barber. This piece is NGC graded. So what do you think it grades? I'm also going to post another example of this coin that is PCGS graded today.

NGC would grade this higher at MS-65 or 66. Thanks Bill for the history lesson.

weak strike on obverse may have affected their grade. I'd go MS65 but NGC may have called it 64

Believe it or not NGC graded this 1907 $10 Indian gold as an MS-61! I couldn't believe it when I was this coin in the inventory of one of my suppliers when I was a dealer. I couldn't believe that it was not in his "crack out and re-submit" box.
I bought the piece for MS-61 wholesale money and did not put it in my business inventory. When I obtained an upgrade with the PCGS piece that I posted on the same day as this coin, I kept it.
I have seen other examples of the 1907 No Periods $10 Indian gold that have been over graded and under graded. This coin tends to come with softly struck details and satiny luster. Some graders just don't seem to know what to do with it. This one, however, with an MS-61 grade is the most under graded example of this coin that I have seen. It might lose a point for satiny luster, but on the whole this coin is at least an MS-63, and probably could make MS-64 from the right grader.

NGC lost their mind on this one - it is easily MS-64 with a good shot at 65. Only thing holding it back IMHO is some strike weakness.
