Sorry peaches2165, but I'm having trouble finding this coin. On the obv, the two characters on the left and right are tong bao, but I cannot find a Chinese emperor with the top and bottom characters on this coin. Oddly, the bottom character reminds me of shui ("water"). There are others here who hopefully can step up and be more helpful.

It's Japanese. The same design was used from about 1680-1860 if I recall. The country ran critically low on copper deposits in ca. 1700, so these coins were increasingly debased with iron until the borders were re-opened in the 1860s, and these coins were retired in 1870. You can narrow these coins down very specifically based on the calligraphy style, but the simplest test is to see if it sticks to a magnet.

At first look it seemed to me that the legs of Ho (left char) touch each other on the top. This would make it Ko-Kanei Tsuho, produced from 1626 till 1668. However the quality of the coin / image doesn't allow me to be positive about this.
