I got this Walking Liberty half, and it has a stone mounted in the sun. I can't find another one anywhere. Is it a promo of some sort? Haaalllpp!

Purely an un-educated guess but having spent time as an apprentice jeweller we were made to cut the heads out of coins etc as practice. No doubt stonesetters are asked to practice setting stones in coins for practice also.

Not to say this wasn't commercially sold but it could explain some such oddities.
