Hi ... We have several Churchill Dollars that we inherited. One of them is quite different than the others and is very shiny. I scanned both sides of it compared with one of the regular ones. Wondering if anyone knows anything about this version. On the scan the shiny one comes out dark but is very shiny and clearly in a different finish compared to the others. The regular one is on the left; the shiny one on the right. Any thoughts on whether this one carries any worth for collectability or value.

Hi,

These coins are actually crowns, not dollars.

Coincraft's, standard catalogue of English and UK coins lists two different types for 1965, the normal one (as you have on the left, and a scarce one with a satin finish. I don't think this is the latter though - more likely just one that somebody has polished up in some way.

Interesting ... The finish is clearly different than the others and the colour is more of a nickel tone. The ridges on the sides and detail on both sides is there, so it hasn't been dipped in anything. Not sure this could have been accomplished with a buffing. I do suspect it was obtained in 1965 with the others and must be an issued piece.

Hopefully someone else has come across something similar and can offer more info.

Hello Sailormannn I am no expert but after some quick research I feel that you may have the rare satin specimen version. The reason for this is that there were no proof versions of the 1965 crown an the toning on the one you have there is definitely different to the norm. It also looks quite like the satin example pictured on the NGC website: https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...-duid-123944

If so an exciting find for you! :)
