Hi All,

I'm looking at purchasing this 1901 Straits Settlements 50 cent coin. I asked the seller to weigh it, and it comes in at 12.8 grams. The coin should weigh in at 13.5 grams, so I'm a bit skeptical.

Is it right for one of these to be so underweight? It looks alright from the pics but I don't want to get burned as I'm not an expert with these pieces!

Opinions appreciated Thanks!

It's hard to tell from the photos if it's real or fake, but being just short of a gram in weight tells me to walk away from it. I don't see nearly enough wear to warrant any difference in weight even close to that figure, it would need to be worn flat.

The luster under your lighting is also suspect, to me.

Straits coinage has been heavily faked, there are lots of counterfeits out there. Tell your vendor to have it certified and slabbed if he wants you to consider it.
