Went to my friendly nieghborhood dealer this afternoon to sell all those 40% Kennedys I found last week. He gave me just over $600 for them. We were talking as I started going thru different coins I'm needing. This dealer has been a guide and reference for me and although I know he is making money off our transactions I have never felt like he was ripping me off.

When I started collecting he had suggested I do the Mercury dime set first and that is what I had done. The only one left for me to get now is the 16d, which I mentioned as we talked. He laughed and told me he had one, a barely AG2. The date was readable (half of the bottom of the 6 was worn off) and the mint mark was visible...you could tell it was a d but that was about it.

After looking at his sheets he told me he could sell this coin to me for $625....$200 less than the Good price listed in his sheets. Man oh Man was this hard not to go with but after thinking about it for a while I decided not to. When I get this coin I'll end up paying 2-3 times more for it but it will be a decent coin.

Another coin I almost bought today was a 1914d Lincoln Cent. I was going thru his Lincoln Cent box and pulling out dates I needed. I didn't pay any attention to prices on the flips. When I finished I gave him my small stack and he started going thru them. When he got to the 14d there was a (?) mark on the flip under the date. When we looked at the coin with a loupe there were strong scratch marks all around the 1 in 14. The bottom half of the 1 was gone. We came to the conclusion that someone had taken either a 44d or a 24d and tried to make it into a 14d. Needless to say he didn't sell that one to me

I honestly do not know if I would not have taken that 16D. On one hand, you spend a lot of time getting the best examples for the other dates. On the other hand, it would have finished the set at a bargain price.

Another problem for me is that I am a sucker for the unwanted, like mutts at the dog shelter. Someone needs to show some love to that 16D!

Tough call! But you have to do what makes you happy, and I think you did. Since you probably spent a lot of time choosing your other dates, why skimp now?

Good catch on the 14D as well!

I think you made the right call on these two coins !

The 16-D was at a bargain price because it was a bargain coin ,, and the tampered with 14-D was a good catch on your part .

better to save the money and buy a decent examle of both of these coins .
