Quote: Buys over $20 should have a heads up. Over $75 I should be able to explain why its special for the collection and something that doesn't come around on a regular basis that could easily be bought later. Change that to $10 and $25 and you have approximately my situation. (The latter figure is probably closer to $5 if the "explaining" is to myself.) I get around this, of course, by buying loads of coins for $2 or so each instead (and, if I can find any, even bigger loads of even cheaper coins). Quote: My wife just knows to let me look through everything before we spend it. Change "wife" to "mother". One big self-rule for me: I do not buy circulating commemoratives of my own country for above face value (unless they're intended as gifts to others, in which case I usually have no choice) - I try to find them in circulation instead. (With mintages rarely exceeding 10 million, this is quite tricky.)

Now that is a rule I can follow!

The first rule of the coin collection is, you do NOT talk about the coin collection.

My hobby is learning about history--do NOT talk to others about me collecting coins. No need to become a target . . .

Quote: And I have to make sure all coins are out of reach to our cat (she just loves to throw little shiny things on the floor and then play with them). This should probably be a rule in my house (if the cat agrees). My cat is very old and usually just lays sleeping on the places he's not allowed to. Sometimes he just goes a bit crazy. One time he just jumped up, smashed his paw on my table and suddenly a pile of coins was laying on the ground. After which he started playing football with the shiniest one... (Shall I make an account for him here as well now?)

Don't touch my stuff. Don't tell me how much money you spend on coins.

Does "don't ask, don't tell" count as a rule?

No rules. I'm single, no kids. I buy what I want, when I want. (As funds allow, of course)

Rule #1: Don't say anything to anyone about any coins or any collection (this is my rule to my wife)
Rule #2: Don't buy anything from anyone, especially if it has anything to do with coins, without prior approval (this is my wife's rule to me)

My family knows the rule: all coins must first be checked before dumping into the change jar.

My rule is don't get married as I don't want to give away half of my 30 years worth of collection.
Only spend money I can spare...don't get in debt...
Quality is better than quantity.... I am not adverse to hoarding inexpensive coins but these are just for fun...
