Hi everyone, today was one of the days on which I come home to find a package that I expected to arrive. A couple of days ago I stumbled upon a classified ad in which a whole bunch of coins were offered. All I could make out were a handful of older Francs from Switzerland and some coins that appeared to be a bit older than the usual pre-Euro coins you get in these lots. For what I can say this lot was not exactly a collection but a hoard that was built up from time to time and maybe even inherited once. At first sight I expected many coins that someone would just have brought home from holidays and maybe a couple of silver coins. Anyway, the pictures were quite bad but nevertheless I decided to buy the coins and paid about 55 Euro incl. shipping. About an hour ago I got home and saw the package had arrived. I immediately opened it and started to assort the coins in groups like 'Silver', 'pre-Euro common coins', 'Austrian coins' (you can still exchange Austrian Shillings for Euro and a few others. All coins were wrapped up in 2 plastic bags and I made sure only to grab a small handful every time so the fun would last longer. Now, I have to say that I am quite satisfied with what I got. Besides about 200 European coins from the time between 1960 and 1990 (I do not collect them and even though some appear to be in mint state I will probably sell them for a low price) there are some British Post-1948 coins that conditionwise look like they have been struck just yesterday. I also found a bunch of Austrian shillings, some minted in the late 1940s and early 1950s. A few of those issues were completely new to me (but I do not collect Austrian coins anyway). But besides my main goal to get together coins from Prussia and Brandenburg I also collect swiss coins by date and found some nice old Rappen pieces in this lot. But now lets come to the best part. In total 24 silver coins were included in the lot, some of the Swiss ones in brilliant condition. Some of you might imagine how I felt picking all those shiny pieces out of the mass of clad. Attached you can find some impressions of the lot and now I'd like to know what you think of the purchase at all. Bargain, fair or overpriced? Best regards from Berlin Potsdam Silver Swiss non-silver Random European pre-Euro coins UK coins Jersey Penny - I do not have one of these yet and I just like the design so I will keep it :)

Looks like a good purchase to me! Just from the few larger silver coins (not including the 1 or 2 Francs) spot for the silver comes to $44 or 38 euros. All the rest of the silver plus all those other coins for $20? Not bad at all! :)

I see close to 5 Troy ounces (rough estimate)of silver, so with everything else I wish that I had been the lucky buyer!

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Indeed, the price was fairly decent for this lot but compared to other lots this wasn't a special deal. I just bought 2 smaller lots from classified ads and paid about 215 € with shipping. I guess they will arrive by the end of next week and I will make sure to show them here. One small sneak preview that I can give is that one of the lots contains a few splendid Indian Head cents, at least one of them being a pretty scarce key date with mintage below 5 million pieces so stay tuned ;) Best regards from Berlin

So you bought the lot for 55 Euro and got all the silver included. Let's just start with the bullion value at the silver price of the day:
- 3 French 5 Francs: 14.7 - 1 Two Shilling: 2.77 - 1 Sixpence: 0.69 Euro - 2 Swiss 5 Francs: 12.26 - 1 Swiss 2 Franc: 4.09 - 3 Swiss 1 Franc: 6.12 - 6 Swiss 1/2 Franc: 6.12 - 1 Italian 500 Lire: 4.50 - 5 Austrian 10 Schilling: 11.75 - 1 Belgian 50 Francs coin: 5.11
In total: 68.11 Euro just in bullion value. And then you got about 200 coins and shipping in addition. Good deal? Yes sir!

Thanks Ultrarant :) As I said, I recently purchased two more lots. The first one arrived today and should be nice to look at for the collectors of Indian Head cents. Sorry for the bad images, I will provide better scans later First two coins are Westfalen Notgeld and a Prussian 1/6 Thaler (contemporary counterfeit). Then there is a bunch of older Italian coins. Then there are some really nice cents: 1852, 1859, 1864, 1865, 1871, 1886, 1890 (2), 1898, 1908, 1910 I guess the 1871 Cent is at least about XF. I will try to provide a high-res scan later tonight. Oh and I paid 150 € incl. shipping for everything. I guess that is pretty decent regarding the prices for these Cents.

The next lot arrived today. I paid 65 € including shipping and gote some pretty nice German coins. Bavarian and Prussian 2 Mark, Prussian 3 Mark, several different types of 1 Mark silver coins, including a key-date.

You have given us some enjoyable homework to do! So far all purchases seem to add up to a nice little 'paper' profit. If you were to re sell them immediately, you should at least make a small realised real profit out of them.
You have a similar approach to buying coins as myself.

Well, I'll keep this thread updated with the lots I buy.
The 'profit' for me in these lots is just the fact that I can reduce the costs of coins for my collection by selling the coins I do not collect.

The 1871 Indian cent looks at least very fine, maybe extra fine. Coin Dealer Newsletter Graysheet is 230$ in VF and 360$ in XF. You did well!
